Cerebral ischemia results in brain injury at the molecular, cellular, and physiologic levels. The mechanisms are many, including energy failure, release of neurotoxins (e.g., excitatory amino acids), and transmembrane electrolyte abnormalities. Secondary injury can occur with reoxy-genation and reperfusion. The mechanism of secondary injury appears to involve oxygen radicals and inflammation pathways.
