In patients with whom both techniques are possible, several studies have found that endovascular therapy is preferable to surgery, because it carries a lower risk of adverse outcomes and inhospital death, shorter length of hospital stay, and decreased hospital charges (12). A study that compared surgical clipping with endovascular coil embolization in the treatment of unruptured cerebral aneurysms reported statistically significant increases in adverse outcomes, length of stay, and hospital charges for surgical clipping (13). In-hospital mortality was also increased, but the difference was not statistically significant. In another study, surgical patients were more likely than coiled patients to experience symptoms, disability, and longer recovery rates (14). Further, Guglielmi detachable coil (GDC)-treated intracranial aneurysms resulted in only a 2.5% rate of rupture and a 1% rate of treatment-related death (15), whereas another group had a 0% rate of aneurysmal rupture and mortality (16).
