Diagnosis Of Intracerebral Hemorrhage

Patients with ICH often have a decreased level of consciousness, with progressive decline in neurologic status as the ICH expands. In addition to obtaining a thorough medical history and neurologic examination, the most useful diagnostic test is a CT scan. Except in patients with very low hematocrit or with a very acute hemorrhage, ICH typically presents as an enhanced lesion in the scan. CT and magnetic resonance angiography might be helpful in excluding secondary causes of ICH. Contrast angiography, however, is required for the definitive diagnosis of secondary causes, such as aneurysm or arteriovenous malformation.
