Endovascular Cooling

It has been shown that a closed-loop endovascular system (70) placed in the inferior vena cava can reduce core body temperature by 0.8°C/hr following return of spontaneous circulation in patients with ventricular fibrillation (VF) (71). Similarly, the feasibility of inducing and maintaining moderate hypothermia with the use of endovascular cooling was studied (72 ). Six patients with severe acute ischemic stroke were treated with moderate hypothermia. Researchers were able to cool patients at a rate of 1.4°C/hr and reached target temperature after 3 hr (range, 2-4.5 hr). None of the patients experienced significant complications in either of these studies.
