Human Experience With Hypothermia Measuring Temperature

Although the target organ for hypothermia is the brain, several other sites that require less invasive measures have been evaluated. Direct brain temperature measurements are possible with the use of a thermistor in a ventriculostomy catheter. However, this is not always possible or desirable; therefore, surrogate sites are frequently utilized. Several studies have compared pulmonary artery, bladder, tympanic membrane, and esophageal temperatures with brain temperature and found them to correlate closely (55-57). Although rectal temperature has been shown to correlate with brain temperature in some studies, it is considered less accurate than other sites.
