The scientific understanding of the problem of cerebral venous thrombosis (CVT) and venous stroke and their treatment is based upon several factors, including cerebral venous anatomy, physiology of venous circulation, underlying genetic and/or environmental/acquired factors that influence clotting and circulation, and the use of rigorous, well-controlled clinical trials. Timely and accurate diagnosis of CVT depends on an understanding of the myriad of clinical presentations in the proper setting and the urgent use of appropriate, sensitive diagnostic studies. In this chapter, we review several clinically important aspects of CVT (in both adults and children), focusing on the scientific basis for clinical presentation, risk factors, pathogenesis, natural history and prognosis, diagnostic imaging, and treatment.
