Ischemiainduced Gene Expression

Cerebral ischemia is generally associated with cessation of gene expression and protein synthesis. However, it is now well recognized that the cell does indeed upregulate new genes and proteins in response to such insults. High-throughput molecular techniques now make it possible to study large numbers of genes that are involved in ischemic pathogenesis. Using such microarray analysis, several groups have documented upregulation of substantial numbers of genes, including the immediate early genes (IEGs) and genes involved in apoptosis, ion channels, inflammation, and others (68-71). Such an approach could lead to the discovery of new pathways and gene families involved in ischemic damage, as well as endogenous mechanisms of protection.
