Limitations in the Widespread Use of Hypothermia

A recent study by Abella et al. (71) surveyed 265 randomly selected physicians from emergency medicine, critical care, and cardiology as to whether they treated patients with hypothermia. The majority (87%) had not used hypothermia for patients after CA. Among the reasons given were: (i) 49% felt that supportive data was insufficient, (ii) 32% mentioned the lack of incorporation of hypothermia into advanced cardiovascular life support (ACLS) protocols, and (iii) 28% felt that cooling methods were technically too slow or too difficult (71 ). Although the controlled studies and several follow-up studies support the use of hypothermia in patients after CA, awareness and education regarding this treatment option must be improved, and hypothermia protocols should be considered for inclusion in future iterations of ACLS.
