Studies in animal models and in vitro have demonstrated that the mechanisms underlying ischemic injury in the neonatal brain differ in many important ways from those in the adult brain (10-12). Differences in maturational biology [the blood-brain barrier (BBB), cerebrovascular autoregulation, and signaling pathways] and pathophysiology (excitotoxicity, oxidative stress, inflammatory response, and cell death pathways) have been described and emphasize the importance of considering neonatal stroke to be distinct from its adult counterpart, particularly in the development of treatment strategies.
