Monitoring

Animal models eliminate much of the variability associated with the human condition and thereby provide the experimentalist with the degree of control and predictability for hypothesis testing.

In every brain ischemia experiment, several physiologic parameters must be monitored closely to exclude variability and increase reliability of the results. Among them are the precise control of arterial blood pressure, blood gases (pO2, pH, pCO2), serum glucose levels, and body or brain temperature (2). Failure to monitor and, failure to control these variables when necessary, confounds the validity of the results. Monitoring of some of these variables is especially difficult in small animals, such as mice and gerbils.
