Multimodal Imaging

Multimodal imaging involves two or more imaging modalities within the setting of a single examination, by using dual- or triple-labeled optical or nuclear "reporter" agents or by performing ultrasound or optical studies within the CT, MR, or SPECT environment. PET-SPECT, PET-CT scanner hybrids, and NIRS, in combination with MR, are rapidly evolving examples of multimodal imaging. This technique has the ability to provide noninvasive analyses of both endogenous and exogenous gene expression in the "molecular imaging" animal models that will effectively translate new therapy strategies from experimental into clinical applications (8).
