In chapter 8 we described the "dialogue" between a cell's internal state and its pattern of gene expression. We drew attention to the delay between a change in the gene expression pattern and the resulting change in internal state. This combination of dialogue and delay allows the cell to change progressively: the cell cycle, differentiation and apoptosis are possible consequences.
