However, these few studies have consistently found elevated risks of about twofold (Table 3) (3,37,96,132,155-158). One study found a greater than fourfold increase in risk for the highest category of BMI (> 30) in a Japanese cohort, but only among women (36). Obesity is thought to operate indirectly to increase the risk of gallbladder cancer by increasing the risk of gallstones, which in turn, causes chronic inflammation and increased risk of biliary tract cancer (134).
