Glossary gallbladder A small, pear-shaped, muscular sac under the right lobe of the liver. The gallbladder stores bile secreted by the liver until the bile is needed for digestion.

gallstone A small, hardened mass composed of cholesterol, calcium salts, and bile pigments. A gallstone can form in the gallbladder or in a bile duct.

gastric ulcer See ulcer, peptic.

gastroesophageal reflux disease A digestive disorder in which the valve connecting the esophagus and the stomach does not close properly, allowing stomach acids and other irritants to flow backward into the esophagus.

gastrointestinal (GI) series Diagnostic procedures in which a series of X rays of the digestive tract are taken after a person swallows a barium mixture or receives a barium enema.

gastrointestinal tract See digestive tract.

generalized anxiety disorder A mental disorder characterized by persistent, unrealistic worry or fear about the common events of daily life such as work, health, and family relationships.

genital herpes See herpes, genital. genital warts See warts, genital.

genitourinary tract The organs concerned with sexual reproduction and with producing and excreting urine.

GERD See gastroesophageal reflux disease.

gingivitis Inflammation of the gums, usually caused by a bacterial infection that results from a buildup of dental plaque. An early stage of periodontal disease.

GI series See gastrointestinal (GI) series.

glaucoma Abnormally high pressure inside the eyeball that damages peripheral (side) vision, causing the visual field to become increasingly narrow until total blindness occurs.

glioma A tumor that arises from the glial cells in the brain.

glomeruli See glomerulus.
