Adverse effects

Imiquimod is generally well tolerated and does not tend to show any systemic adverse effects. Over half the patients treated in studies have shown some form of local skin irritation, such as erythema, itching and burning. These tend to be mild, and cause discontinuation in only 1-2 per cent of patients. There has been hypopigmentation or hyperpigmentation reported in some patients, and it is unclear whether this is permanent or reversible. It is important to note that there have been reports of severe reactions at the urethral meatus, causing dysuria in women (EMC, 2004c).
