Implementation Of Pgds

The named healthcare professional(s) who will be using the PGD must be able to demonstrate competency in the safe supply and/or administration of medicines - this must include documented evidence of skills and enhancement of professional knowledge undertaken with relevance to the clinical condi-tion(s) that applies within the PGD. All healthcare professionals must act accordingly within their appropriate Code of Professional Conduct and have a complete understanding that they are professionally and personally accountable for their practice when using PGDs.

The Nursing and Midwifery Council (NMC) state: 'as a registered nurse, midwife or specialist community public health nurse, you are accountable for your actions and omissions. In administering any medication... you must exercise your professional judgement and apply your knowledge and skill in the given situation7 (NMC 2004a p. 4).
