Tetracyclines chelate with metal ions such as calcium or iron, and for this reason should not be administered with antacids or iron preparations, as these will reduce absorption. Patients can be advised to dose at least two hours apart if taking both. Tetracyclines, being bacteriostatic, may also interfere with the bactericidal effects of penicillins, so that care should be taken when using the two together.
