The Nordic experience of advanced practice is very different from the UK, Canadian and US perspectives. This is because they have had no shortage of doctors; therefore nurse practitioner roles that are based on the acquisition of 'medical roles' have not been developed. Advanced practice is seen as a 'higher level' of generalist nursing practice, and strives to improve quality while reducing costs (Lorensen et al., 1998). This is similar to the description of 'higher-level' practice as laid down by the former UKCC (1999).
