In 1995 the WHO conducted a study that estimated at least 33 million cases of curable STIs had occurred during that year. The crucial thing about this statistic was that these STIs were not only curable but preventable, and their complications ranked among the top 10 causes of healthy days lost by adults in the developing world (WHO, 1995).
Nationally in the UK, sexual health has been high on successive governments' agendas for improvement in response to the rise in sexually transmitted infections and a poor record in teenage pregnancy. The British government clearly sees sexual health as being a key health issue, identifying the following consequences of poor sexual health:
• Pelvic inflammatory disease, which can cause ectopic pregnancies and infertility
