A recombinant outer surface protein A vaccine has been licensed for use in humans against Lyme disease caused by infection with organisms belonging to the B. burgdorferi complex. Although many issues surrounding vaccine use remain unsettled, the vaccine is expected to be in widespread use in endemic areas. Infection is also prevented by avoiding tick-infested areas; wearing protective clothing; checking your clothing, body, and pets for ticks; and removing them promptly.
