Acinetobacter spp. and S. maltophilia are reliably identified by the API 20E system (bioMerieux Inc., St. Louis, Mo), although other commercial systems may not perform well. The other organisms are most reliably identified using conventional biochemical and physiologic charac teristics, such as those outlined in Table 23-4.
