is a temporary, nonfeeding stage and usually reverts back to the trophozoite stage. Both genera of free-living amebae are also characterized by having the typical hexagonal double-walled cyst that can be seen using calcofluor white stain. Balamuthia mandrillaris, like Acanthamoeba spp., the cause of granulomatous amebic encephalitis (GAE), looks much like Acanthamoeba, but does not grow well on the Escherichia cotf-seedeaj nonnutrient agar plates. The trophozoites are characterized by extensive branching, and the cysts have the typical double wall. Unlike the acute infection primal^ amebic meningoencephalitis (PAM) caused by Naeglentf fowleri, GAE is a more chronic infection like that seen with the Acanthamoeba spp.
