Among different bacteria and even among different genes within the same bacterium, the mechanisms by which inducers and co-repressors are involved in gene regulation vary widely. Furthermore, bacterial cells have mechanisms to detect environmental changes and can generate signals that interact with gene expression machinery so that appropriate products are made in response to the environmental changes. Also, several complex interactions between different regulatory systems are found within a single cell so that many regulation schemes do not function independently. Such diversity and interdependence is a necessary component of metabolism so that the organism's response to the environment is timely, well coordinated, and appropriate.
